Gold
This poem is one that I wrote to play on the themes within Robert Frost’s famous Nothing Gold Can Stay. I wanted to explore the darker elements of the poem, and I think it is clear from the verse that while writing Gold the imagery of Eve, the apple, and the serpent were also vivid and top of mind.
My nature is anything but kind
Its horror stings and wraps my heart,
and as the vines slide into serpents,
they writhe, twist and choke my soul
All and everything I see becomes Gold.
I whisper out a word of prayer, my vines
turn to wildflowers. My lungs renew their air,
But only so an hour, until the leaves subside
The thorns revealed, the serpents arrived.
With an apple I cast myself apart,
I’ll watch the sun burn out
All this I’ve witnessed in a day
For nothing gold can stay.
